Moving to South Gate? Here is what you can expect once you get to South Gate
Located in the heart of the Los Angeles metropolitan area, South Gate is an electric, urban city that consists of residential and commercial development across 7.4 square miles of space. South Gate borders Bell Gardens, Cudahy, Downey, Florence-Graham, Huntington Park, Lynwood, Paramount, and Walnut Park.
Currently, South Gate is the 73rd largest city in California, and the 17th largest city in Los Angeles County. South Gate has a population of 95,219 people, with a rather young median age of 31.2. The median household income of its residents is $45,522, and the median property value is $329,000. The city has a heavy Hispanic citizenry, as 95.3 percent of the population is Latino, and 3.09 percent is white.
At the end of 1918, 125 houses had been constructed in South Gate and the population was around 500. Along the parkways, residents enjoyed shade trees and flowers, and the growing community, which the locals called Southgate Gardens, extended east from Long Beach Boulevard to Otis, and south from Santa Ana to Independence. Post, State, and Victoria streets were designated the “business district.”
In 1919, the first school, which was called State Street School, was established with 52 students. The tiny, framed building was called Southgate Gardens School and was located in Madison near Independence. The school later moved to State and Santa Ana streets, where it is still located. It holds the unique position of being located between three political jurisdictions, at the junction of Huntington Park, Walnut Park, and South Gate.
On January 20, 1923, South Gate was incorporated. The petition to incorporate was signed by more than 50 electors before it was presented to the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors. The board formally declared the incorporation of the “City of South Gate” when it had a population of 2,500 people.
The years following South Gate’s incorporation were boom years. Families found superior contentment in the fertile suburb, as schools and churches were established, along with the city government, and fire and police protection. In addition, a residential and industrial base was established that would serve as the cornerstone of South Gate to its current state. During its first year of incorporation, the City Hall was built at the intersection of Post and Victoria, although it was replaced in 1942, on California Avenue. It is still used today
Today, South Gate has outstanding city services, great parks and recreation facilities, and supports family-friendly environment.
