The Layout of the City

Palo Alto is a city in Santa Clara County, covering about twenty-four square miles at the northern edge of Silicon Valley. It is home to roughly 68,000 people and sits next to Mountain View, Los Altos, and Stanford land, stretching from the bay toward the foothills. It is known for its university ties, its tree-lined streets, and its long history.

The city has two downtowns: the main one along University Avenue near the university, and a second along California Avenue to the south. Around them sit established neighborhoods, including historic areas with craftsman and period homes, along with well-known Eichler tracts in the southern part of the city. Streets throughout are shaded by mature trees, and many homes sit on lots that have been settled for generations.

Stanford University and its research park sit just to the west, shaping much of the area’s character and economy. Major roads like El Camino Real and Embarcadero, along with Caltrain, connect Palo Alto to the rest of the Peninsula and the valley.

The Birthplace of Silicon Valley

The land was home to the Ohlone people for thousands of years. The city takes its name from a tall redwood, El Palo Alto, that still stands by the creek at the city’s edge. The modern city grew in the 1890s alongside the founding of Stanford University, which drew families and faculty to the area, and Palo Alto was incorporated in 1894.

For decades, the city grew steadily as a university town surrounded by orchards. Its place in history changed in 1939, when two Stanford graduates started a company in a Palo Alto garage, a moment often called the birthplace of Silicon Valley.

In the decades that followed, the technology industry grew up around the city, with the Stanford Research Park drawing major firms. Palo Alto became one of the most prominent addresses in the valley, while keeping its historic neighborhoods and tree-lined streets intact. Today it blends that deep history with a central role in modern technology.

What a Palo Alto Move Actually Involves

Palo Alto is its own city, and its older homes and leafy streets shape every move. The neighborhoods near the two downtowns have narrow streets, mature trees, and limited parking, so for moves there we plan the timing and the truck’s spot in advance to avoid holding up the crew.
