The Layout of the City

Sunnyvale is a city in Santa Clara County, covering about twenty-two square miles in the center of Silicon Valley. It is home to roughly 155,000 people, making it one of the largest cities in the area, and it sits next to Mountain View, Cupertino, and Santa Clara. It is known as a core part of the valley’s tech economy.

The housing is varied and spread across the city. Older neighborhoods hold ranch homes and well-known Eichler tracts, while apartment complexes cluster near the major campuses, and townhomes and condos rise near the downtown. That downtown, centered on Murphy Avenue, is a walkable district of restaurants and shops anchored by a Caltrain station.

Sunnyvale is home to large technology campuses and a long history in aerospace, and major roads like El Camino Real and Lawrence Expressway, along with Caltrain, carry much of the daily traffic. The mix of big employers and varied housing makes it one of the busiest cities in the valley.

From Orchards to Aerospace to Tech

The land was home to the Ohlone people for thousands of years before it became part of a Mexican land grant. A settler named Martin Murphy established a farm here in the 1800s, and the area grew into a farming community known for its orchards and fruit canneries, served by the railroad.

Sunnyvale incorporated as a city in 1912. In the decades that followed, aerospace and defense work arrived, with major companies building large operations that drew workers and spurred growth well into the twentieth century.

As Silicon Valley took shape, the technology industry grew up alongside that aerospace base, and Sunnyvale became home to major tech campuses. Waves of new residents arrived from around the world, making the city one of the most diverse in the region. Today it blends its orchard and aerospace history with a central role in modern technology.

What a Sunnyvale Move Actually Involves

Sunnyvale is its own city, and its busy roads, varied housing, and big campuses each shape a move. The apartment complexes near the tech campuses usually have shared entrances, stairs or elevators, and rules about move-in times, so we coordinate access and reserve space ahead of time.

The Eichler tracts bring their own needs. These homes have open layouts and wide glass, so we add an extra eye on walls and doorways and bring the right padding. The downtown around Murphy Avenue is busier, with limited parking, so for moves there we plan the timing and the truck’s spot in advance.

Across the city, major roads like El Camino and Lawrence Expressway call for good timing, and homes of every type call for careful handling and floor protection.
