The Layout of the City

Milpitas is a city in Santa Clara County, covering about fourteen square miles at the northern tip of Silicon Valley. It is home to roughly 80,000 people and sits between San Jose to the south and Fremont to the north, with the eastern foothills rising along one side.

Much of the city’s housing is newer, with townhome and condo communities and apartment complexes spread across the central and southern areas, many near the Great Mall and the transit lines. Established single-family neighborhoods fill in around them, while homes climb toward the hills on the eastern edge. The flatter western side, toward the bay, holds much of the city’s industrial and commercial space.

Milpitas is well-connected, with a BART station, light rail, and major freeways tying it to the rest of the region. Shopping centers like the Great Mall and McCarthy Ranch draw visitors from across the area, and the city’s location makes it a natural link between the South Bay and the East Bay.

From Little Cornfields to a Tech Hub

The land was home to the Ohlone people for thousands of years before it became part of a Mexican land grant. The name Milpitas comes from a Spanish term meaning little cornfields, a reference to the small farm plots that once covered the area. Through the nineteenth century, the land was farmed, and a small rural community grew along the rail line.

Milpitas incorporated as a city in 1954, around the time a major auto plant opened nearby and drew workers to the area. That early industry set the stage for decades of growth.

As Silicon Valley took shape, Milpitas became a center for technology manufacturing, with semiconductor and electronics companies building across the city. Waves of new residents arrived, making Milpitas one of the more diverse cities in the region. Today, it blends that manufacturing base with newer housing and busy retail centers.

What a Milpitas Move Actually Involves
