The Layout of the City

Los Altos is a city in Santa Clara County, covering about seven square miles in the western part of Silicon Valley. It is home to roughly 30,000 people and sits next to Mountain View, Sunnyvale, Cupertino, and Palo Alto. It is known for its quiet, residential feel and its tree-lined streets.

The heart of the city is its small downtown, often called the village, a low-rise stretch of Main Street and State Street lined with shops and restaurants and very few tall buildings. Around it spread established neighborhoods of ranch homes, Eichler tracts, and large custom houses, most on generous lots with mature trees. There is little of the apartment density found in nearby cities, which gives Los Altos its open, green character.

To the southwest lies the separate town of Los Altos Hills, with even larger, more rural lots. Within Los Altos itself, parks and the nearby Rancho San Antonio open space give residents easy access to the outdoors, while major roads like El Camino Real and Foothill Expressway connect the city to the rest of the valley.

From Apricot Orchards to Apple’s First Garage

The land was home to the Ohlone people for thousands of years before Spanish and Mexican ranches spread across the valley. The name Los Altos means the heights in Spanish, a nod to the area’s gentle rise toward the foothills. Through the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the land was covered in orchards, with apricots a signature local crop.

The town took shape around a rail stop in the early 1900s, and homes slowly filled in among the orchards. Los Altos incorporated as a city in 1952, as the wider valley began its shift away from farming.

Los Altos also holds a small but famous place in technology history. It was in the garage of a Los Altos home that Apple was founded in 1976, one of several valley garages where the modern tech industry began. Today the city keeps its quiet, orchard-era calm while sitting in the middle of Silicon Valley.

What a Los Altos Move Actually Involves

Los Altos is its own city, and its quiet streets and large lots shape every move. The downtown village is the busiest spot, with limited parking along Main and State Streets.
