The Layout of the City

Mountain View is a city in Santa Clara County, covering about twelve square miles in the heart of Silicon Valley. It is home to roughly 82,000 people and sits between Palo Alto and Sunnyvale, stretching from the foothills’ edge down to the bay. It is known for its mix of residential neighborhoods and major technology campuses.

The center of the city is its downtown, built around Castro Street, a lively stretch of restaurants and shops anchored by a Caltrain and light rail station. Around it sit varied neighborhoods, including well-known Eichler tracts with their flat roofs and open plans, along with apartment and townhome complexes. Toward the bay lies the North Bayshore area, home to large tech campuses and open space along the water.

Mountain View also has plenty of green space and landmarks, from Shoreline Park and its amphitheater to the historic airfield at Moffett, just across the city’s edge. Major roads like El Camino Real and Central Expressway, along with Caltrain, connect the city to the rest of the valley.

From Stagecoach Stop to Silicon Valley Center

The land was home to the Ohlone people for thousands of years before Spanish and Mexican ranches spread across the area. The city took its name from the clear views of the Santa Cruz Mountains to the west. In the 1800s, a stagecoach stop and then a rail station gave rise to a small farming town surrounded by orchards.

Mountain View was incorporated as a city in 1902. For decades, it stayed a quiet agricultural community, though the nearby airfield at Moffett, which opened in the 1930s, brought aviation and later research work to the area.

The second half of the twentieth century transformed the city, as electronics and computing firms moved in and orchards gave way to campuses and homes. Mountain View became a center of the technology industry, home to major companies along the bay. Today it blends busy tech campuses with established neighborhoods and a thriving downtown.
