Moving to Norwalk? Here is what you can expect once you get to Norwalk.

Norwalk, California, is an incorporated city, as of 1957, which was founded in the late 19th Century. Norwalk is located 17 miles southeast of Downtown Los Angeles, making it a part of the Greater Los Angeles area. Norwalk borders Artesia, Bellflower, Cerritos, Downey, and Santa Fe Springs.

Norwalk is Los Angeles County’s 66th City and is 9.77 square miles. Located right between Los Angeles and Orange County, Norwalk is just a few minutes from everything both counties offer, with both the mountains and beaches readily accessible. Norwalk contracts for services in both law enforcement and fire control with Los Angeles County, and the city also contracts for water and trash disposal. In business, education, government, and law enforcement, the signs of growth serve as evidence for a bright future. The Norwalk park system has 12 beautiful parks that make up a total of 87.3 acres of land.

Norwalk has a population of 106,360 people, and a median resident age of 34.9. The citizens of Norwalk have a median household income of $61,050, and is growing. The population of Norwalk is very diverse and consists of citizens who are 69.8 percent Hispanic, 13.1 percent Asian, and 11.3 percent white. The median property value in Norwalk is $350,600, and 63 percent of the residents own their homes.

The area of Norwalk was once home to the Shoshonean Native American tribe, and their huts were part of the Sejat Indian village. In the 1760s, pioneering settlers and church missions occupied the land, which was under Spanish rule. After the 1948 Mexican–American War in 1848, the land was subdivided and put up for sale when California became a part of the union of the United States.

The Sproul Brothers, from Oregon, purchased 463 acres of land that now occupies Norwalk for $11 an acre. In 1873, railroad construction in the area had begun, and the Sprouls gave 23 acres to the railroad for a passenger stop. Then, right after the Anaheim Branch Railroad crossed what the locals called the “North-walk,” the Sprouls surveyed a town site, and in 1874, the area officially became Norwalk.

In the 1890s, Norwalk’s prosperity was obvious, for the numerous, grand homes were located in the middle of giant orchards, and busy farms and dairies. In the early 1900s, Norwalk was an established dairy center, and it was also home to large sugar beet farms, which dominated that area of Southern California during that time.
