It was once the home of the Chumash Indians about 3,000 years ago, and in 1770, Spaniard Captain Gaspar de Portola explored the area, and set up camp near a Chumash village. The Spanish eventually settled the area, but when Mexico won independence from Spain in 1821, California became a territory of Mexico. After the Mexican-American War, California became a part of the American union in 1850. At that time, most of the land that would became Ventura County was divided among 19 families. In 1881, the Russell brothers bought a large portion of the land for the purpose of ranching cattle, before it was sold to William Randolph Hearst in 1925.
The land continued to be used as a cattle ranch operation, but the Albertson Company also used the property for film and television, including episodes of “Tarzan,” “Buck Rogers,” “Gunsmoke,” and “Bonanza,” as well as “Laredo,” “Robin Hood,” and “King Rat
