The major area of San Marino was included in a Mexican Land Grant in 1830 to a Native American named Senora Victoria Reid, who was the widow of a Scotsman. Victoria named her rancho “Huerta de Cuati.”

Before the grant, the region was part of the San Gabriel Mission, and before that, San Marino was occupied by Native Americans who had a village located at what is now Huntington School.

In 1852, Don Benito Wilson took control of Victoria’s rancho, and later, Wilson gave a large portion of the land to his daughter Maria de Jesus. Maria married J. de Barth Shorb, and he named the rancho after his grandfather’s Maryland plantation, which received its name from the Republic of San Marino, in Italy. San Marino, California was born.

In 1903, the Shorb Rancho was purchased by Henry E. Huntington, and in 1913, the three primary Ranchos in San Marino were subdivided into smaller Ranchos, which included Stoneman, White, Rose, as well as others. All of them were then incorporated as the city of San Marino.

The San Marino seal provides the legacy of the land. It contains the three summits of Mt. Titano, and upon each there is a tower that is fortified with walls built from native rock and capped with a bronze plume. All of it is surrounded by a heart-shaped scroll with two roundels and a lozenge at the top. The left side displays a beautiful palm frond and underneath the right side of the seal there is a branch from an orange tree. The crown that represents the monarchy on the original seal, but it was removed when William Hertrich redesigned the city’s Coat of Arms in the 1920s.

On September 9, 1917, the first San Marino school opened at the corner of Monterey Road and Oak Knoll, in what was called the Old Mayberry Home. The school had three teachers and 35 students from grades kindergarten to eighth. The high school students attended South Pasadena High until San Marino High School was built. San Marion High School had its first graduating class in 1956. The high school nickname, “The Titans,” came from Mt. Titano, which is in the Republic of San Marino.
