La Verne, California, is located in Los Angeles County, and it shares a border with Claremont, Pomona, and San Dimas. La Verne has a population of 32,078 citizens, who have a median age of 42.9. The area that would become La Verne was home to Native Americans for centuries, before the community was “founded” in 1887 by Isaac Wilson Lord, a Los Angeles businessperson. Lord persuaded the Santa Fe Railroad to run a line through the La Verne area because he owned a large amount of property there.
At the time of Lord’s land sale that occupied Today’s La Verne, it was the largest in Southern California history. The new town was called Lordsburg, and more than 2,500 people visited the property and bought $200,000 worth of lots. Immediately after, Lord began development of the community, and within the first four months, he built a 60-room hotel, water mains, a post office, a newspaper, and retail stores.
The hotel never did very well, so in 1889, M.M. Eshelman, a member of the Church of the Brethren, purchased the hotel along with 100 city lots for $15,000, and turned it all into a college. In the fall of 1891, the college opened. It began with 135 students and eight faculty members, and the community quickly became a college town.
In 1912, Lordsburg residents attempted to change the name of the community, but the petition was blocked by Lord himself. However, when he died in 1917, the citizens of voted to change the name to La Verne, and a symbolic wedding took place as the city celebrated the “marriage” of “Miss Lordsburg” and “Mr. La Verne.”
For many years, the citrus industry was the prime economy of the community, and thousands of carloads of oranges, grapefruit, and lemons were shipped out annually. However, there was more money to be made through development, and the 1940s saw more homes built and more immigration to the city. While, La Verne was a small college town for many years, until World War II ended, when an influx of Midwesterners and Easterners arrived looking for a mile climate and a picturesque lifestyle.
