Wood Village Is One of Oregon's Smallest Cities. Location Punches Above Its Weight.

Wood Village is a city of about 4,200 residents in Multnomah County, covering roughly one square mile on the eastern edge of the Portland metro between Fairview and Troutdale. It has its own city government, its own police department, and its own character, even though it takes only a few minutes to drive from one side to the other. The Sandy Boulevard corridor runs east-west through the city on its way from Portland to the Sandy River, and I-84 is accessible at the Wood Village interchange a short distance to the north.

The city’s compact size means it has the feel of a distinct neighborhood more than a full-scale suburb, and the residents who live here value that. The housing stock is predominantly mid-century single-family homes, modest in size and on relatively small lots, with some newer construction on the edges. Commercial activity runs along Sandy Boulevard and at the Wood Village Town Center, a small commercial area that anchors the city’s retail services.

Moves in and out of Wood Village are typically efficient precisely because of the city’s small footprint. Royal Moving & Storage works Wood Village and the eastern Multnomah County communities with flat-rate pricing and the same Portland market crew that covers Troutdale, Fairview, and Gresham.

Wood Village, More Than an Address

Wood Village by the Numbers

Wood Village is a city of approximately 4,200 residents in Multnomah County, Oregon, covering about 1.1 square miles. It is bordered by Fairview to the east, Troutdale to the east and north, Gresham to the south, and unincorporated Multnomah County to the west. I-84 runs along the northern edge of the community, with the Wood Village exit providing access to the city from the freeway. Sandy Boulevard (OR-30) runs east-west through the center of the city on the historic alignment connecting Portland to the Sandy River communities.

Wood Village maintains its own city government, city council, and municipal police department, a notable fact given its small size. City services are focused on the compact residential and commercial core, and the city has maintained its incorporated status since 1951.

The History of the City

Wood Village incorporated in 1951, one of a cluster of small east Multnomah County communities that formalized their municipal status during the postwar period. The community took shape in the 1940s and 1950s as residential development followed the expansion of the highway and rail corridors east from Portland.

The Sandy Boulevard corridor that runs through Wood Village was one of the original automobile routes east from Portland, part of the old Columbia River Highway alignment and later the route to the Mount Hood recreational areas. The community grew up along this corridor, with the modest residential blocks that still characterize most of the city filling in during the postwar decades.

The city’s small size and compact character have given it a consistency over the decades that larger, faster-growing communities have lost. The housing stock remains predominantly mid-century single-family, and the city has maintained a residential character even as the surrounding communities have grown considerably.

What a Wood Village Move Actually Involves

Wood Village moves are among the more logistically simple in the eastern metro. The compact size, accessible streets, and mid-century housing stock create consistent conditions from one job to the next.

The main variables are property-specific: interior stair access, garage orientation, and inventory size. Mid-century homes in the city are typically single-story or modest split-levels, which are efficient to move. Driveways and street access are generally straightforward.

Sandy Boulevard through the center of the city carries commercial traffic and has some constraints on large truck stopping during peak business hours. For properties that require loading directly on Sandy Boulevard, we time the work to minimize the conflict with through traffic.

I-84 access at the Wood Village interchange is fast and direct, making connections to Portland and the metro easy. For moves between Wood Village and the west side of the metro, we plan transit windows around the I-84 commute patterns, which are typically heaviest in the mornings westbound and the afternoons eastbound.
