In 1873, a group led by Eaton purchased 2,400 acres of land from Wilson and Griffin 1873. The abundant harvest of grapes in Altadena helped boost Los Angeles County to become the state’s largest wine producer.
In late 1887, Altadena became a subdivision through the efforts of John and Fred Woodbury, who migrated from Marshalltown, Iowa. The Woodbury family wanted to create an affluent rural suburb of Pasadena, which moved slowly because of a chaotic national economy but was helped by Thaddeus Lowe’s mountain railway that connected Los Angeles to Pasadena to Altadena and beyond.
From the 1890s to the 1920s, ranchers and residents continued to grow grapes and expanded into oranges, olives, walnuts, dates, avocados, commercial fruit, and ornamental plant nurseries. Business magnates also began to develop the area because of its wonderful climate and rural ambiance.
