In 1853, the land area now known as Hollywood was no more than a single adobe hut. Real estate tycoon Harvey Henderson Wilcox purchased 160 acres of land and settled there with his wife, Daeida, who came from a Dutch settlement in Ohio. The city of Hollywood is named after that settlement.
Today, Hollywood has a huge population density, some 22,000 per square mile. The distinctive round building, Capitol Records Tower, continues to dominate the skyline. The median age for Hollywood’s highly diverse demographic is 31 years. In a land of movie stars and overpaid film moguls, the median annual income of $33,694 in 2008 was considered low for Los Angeles. Because Hollywood is technically a neighborhood in the City of Los Angeles, it has no municipal government of its own.
The famous Hollywood sign, a world-wide metaphor for ambition and success, was erected in 1923. Some of the area’s most famous attractions are located near the heartbeat of Hollywood at or near the intersection of Highland Avenue and Hollywood Boulevard. Here, you will find the hand and footprints of the famous in front of Grauman’s Chinese Theatre, Madame Tussaud’s and the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
