Moving to San Miguel? Here is what you can expect once you get to San Miguel

People who travel Highway 101 past the tiny San Miguel, California, area, might think they haven’t missed a whole lot, but they would be wrong. The city of San Miguel is a mix of beautiful vineyards, curious almond orchards, along with cattle ranches. Visiting the community is a trip into the past when much of the California coastline consisted of ranches, citrus orchards, vineyards, wheat fields, and crops.

San Miguel is an authentic look at the old west, California style, and the city’s countryside is a treasure box of wonders hidden away from the passing world. San Miguel was the home of the Mission San Miguel Arcangel, the historic 16th California mission when it was founded by Spanish priests in 1797.

Today, San Miguel is the home of a modest population of 3,214 people, who have a median age of 42. The median household income is an astounding $156,591, and the median property value in the city is more incredible at $914,100, with a homeownership rate in the community of 90.2 percent. San Miguel is located in Contra Costa County and only borders one city, Walnut Creek. San Miguel does not have a great deal of diversity, as its population is 82.5 percent White and 8.09 percent Asian, with a small Hispanic population.

The river to the east and the hills on the west geographically limited the growth of Miguel, but the residents certainly do not mind. While its geographic boundaries made it difficult to become a hub in the area, there is great prosperity in the city and the region. San Miguel’s last significant population boom was during World War II when Camp Roberts, to the south of the city, was a major training facility for the Army. The area of the town is 1.67 square miles, and it has never been incorporated.

If you are looking for some chow in the community, you are looking at four options: Dos Padres, Dos Hermanos, The Country Diner, and the 10th Street Basque Cafe. Like most of the establishments in San Miguel, these are very humble spots. Furthermore, there are only a few parks, though there are winding roads through the town that are perfect for bike rides.

There is one low-end motel, but there are no malls, big grocery stores, or trendy boutiques here. The only retail shop is the quaint San Miguel Mercantile, which sits right next to the Post Office on Mission Street and offers an array of eclectic furnishings, rugs, decorative items, heirlooms, and old books.
