Getting to Know Larkspur
Larkspur at a Glance
Larkspur is a small city of roughly 13,000 in central Marin County, on the west side of the bay just north of the Golden Gate. It is best known for three things: a beautifully preserved historic downtown along Magnolia Avenue, the redwood groves that shade its western canyons, and the Larkspur Ferry Terminal, which carries commuters across the bay to San Francisco. The SMART commuter train also serves the city, and Highway 101 runs along its eastern edge.
The housing follows the terrain. Older, historic homes cluster around the downtown core, wooded houses climb into Baltimore Canyon and Madrone toward Mount Tamalpais, and newer condos and townhomes gather near Larkspur Landing and the Marin Country Mart by the water. It is an affluent, walkable community that mixes small-town character with easy access to the city.
A Look Back at Larkspur
Larkspur grew up in the late 19th century as a resort and residential town, drawing visitors to its redwood groves and, for decades, to a popular open-air dance pavilion. Much of the downtown built in that era still stands, which is why Magnolia Avenue retains such a strong historic character.
The town incorporated in 1908 and grew steadily through the 20th century as Marin suburbanized, with the ferry terminal and later the SMART train reinforcing its role as a commuter community. That blend of preserved history and modern convenience is exactly why moving here can mean a narrow downtown street one day and a canyon staircase the next.
What a Larkspur Move Takes
Larkspur moves are shaped by two things: the redwood canyons and the historic core. Homes in Baltimore Canyon and the wooded western neighborhoods often sit on steep lots with narrow lanes, tight turns, and stairs, so where the truck parks and how the crew stages the carry both take planning, and some homes need a shuttle when the truck cannot get close. Downtown, the older homes near Magnolia Avenue have narrow interiors and limited street parking that we coordinate ahead.
Near Larkspur Landing, condos and townhomes bring elevators and loading zones we book in advance. We handle the canyon access, the truck placement, the historic-home protection, and the parking before the day, so none of it slows the move once we arrive.
