Mill Valley, Beyond the Map
Mill Valley by the Numbers
Mill Valley is an affluent town of roughly 14,000 in southern Marin County, at the foot of Mount Tamalpais and just north of Sausalito and the Golden Gate. It is known for its redwoods, its outdoor culture, and its artistic, small-town character. The walkable downtown centers on Lytton Square and Throckmorton Avenue, with Old Mill Park and the Dipsea steps close by, and Highway 101 runs along the town’s eastern edge.
The housing is defined by the wooded, hilly terrain. Many homes sit on steep lots along narrow, winding roads, and a large share are reached by long staircases rather than driveways. Older cottages cluster near downtown, and the whole town is shaded by redwoods and framed by the open space of Mount Tamalpais. It is one of the most sought-after and scenic places to live in the Bay Area.
The Story of Mill Valley
Mill Valley takes its name from an old sawmill that operated in the redwoods here in the 19th century. The town grew as a resort and residential community once the railroad reached it, drawing visitors up Mount Tamalpais on the scenic “Crookedest Railroad in the World” and hikers onto the trails that still define local life.
It incorporated in 1900 and grew into an affluent, artistic suburb while keeping its wooded character and its downtown intact. That history left a town built into the hillsides and redwoods, which is exactly why moving here rewards a crew that treats stairs and narrow roads as the main event, not an afterthought.
What a Mill Valley Move Really Involves
In most cities, access is one factor among many. In Mill Valley, it is the heart of the move. A large share of homes sit well above or below the road, reached by long private staircases, so the crew often carries everything up or down dozens of steps, and a big truck frequently cannot get close on the narrow, winding roads. That means planning a shuttle, moving belongings between the home and a larger truck parked somewhere workable.
We assess this in advance, sometimes with a look at the property, so the crew size, the equipment, and the shuttle are all set before the day. Downtown cottages add older interiors to protect, and their parking is coordinated ahead. Handled up front, even a hundred-step home moves smoothly.
