Georgetown in Context
The Numbers Behind Georgetown
Georgetown is the seat of Williamson County, with a population well above 75,000 and climbing, located on Interstate 35 about twenty-six miles north of downtown Austin. The North and South San Gabriel Rivers meet within the city, Southwestern University sits just off the square, and Sun City, Texas, spreads across the west side. The historic courthouse square anchors the center of town.
Georgetown has repeatedly ranked among the fastest-growing cities in the United States, driven heavily by Sun City and by family subdivisions spreading north and west.
Georgetown’s Story
Georgetown was established in 1848 as the Williamson County seat. The arrival of the railroad and the founding of Southwestern University, the oldest university in Texas, shaped the nineteenth-century town, and the Victorian commercial buildings around the courthouse square date from that era of prosperity.
A deliberate historic-preservation effort protected the square through the twentieth century, earning it statewide recognition. The modern growth surge came with the development of Sun City, Texas, beginning in the 1990s and the broader northward expansion of the Austin metro, which together turned a historic county seat into one of the nation’s fastest-growing cities.
What Moving Day Looks Like in Georgetown
Georgetown move days vary sharply by neighborhood. Homes near the square are historic, with mature trees, tight lots, and original details that demand careful protection and precise truck placement. Sun City moves are often downsizing moves, with their own community access procedures and a pace that respects the residents. New subdivisions on the edges bring stairs and HOA rules.
Interstate 35 splits the city and congests at peak hours, and the river crossings and the square’s one-way streets shape downtown access. We plan parking, community access, and travel timing in advance so the day runs smoothly.
