Dripping Springs is a small city of roughly 5,000 residents, but its extraterritorial jurisdiction and surrounding rural area hold many times that number across western Hays County. It sits on Highway 290 about twenty-five miles west of downtown Austin, where the prairie meets the Hill Country, near the headwaters of Onion Creek and the famous Hamilton Pool.

Dripping Springs’ Story

Settlers reached the area in the 1850s, drawn to the dripping springs that fed the creeks. The Pound family and others established farms and a small community, and the Pound House Museum preserves that early history. For generations, Dripping Springs was a quiet ranching town in the hills.

In recent decades, the town reinvented itself around its landscape. It became a destination for weddings, a hub of Texas craft distilling and brewing, and a gateway for visitors to Hamilton Pool, Reimers Ranch, and the wider Hill Country. Growth has come, but largely as low-density estate and ranch development rather than dense subdivisions.
