Father Juan Crespi, chaplain and diarist of the expedition, described that area that became Westlake Village in the following way: “We are on a plain of considerable extent and much beauty, forested on all parts by live oaks and oak trees, with much pasturage and water.”

The Spanish eventually settled the area, but when Mexico won independence from Spain in 1821, California became a territory of Mexico. After the Mexican-American War, California became a part of the American union in 1850. At that time, most of the land that would became Ventura County was divided among 19 families. In 1881, the Russell brothers bought a large portion of the land for the purpose of ranching cattle, before it was sold to William Randolph Hearst in 1925.
