Moving to Tarzana? Here is what you can expect once you get to Tarzana.

Your assumption is correct. Yes, the community of Tarzana is named after the Lord of the Apes, Tarzan.

Here is how it formed.

Using the Royalties from his “Tarzan” books and their film adaptations, Edgar Rice Boroughs moved his family to the Los Angeles area in 1919. Boroughs paid $125,000 for Mil Flores, a 540-acre rural estate, which reigned atop a mountain above Ventura Boulevard. The estate included a 4,500-square-foot, Spanish-style mansion and a pool, along with cabins and a herd of Angora goats.

Burroughs renamed Mil Flores to Tarzana in order to pay homage to the character that made him famous and rich. He loved the ranch that he mastered over, which grew to include draft horses, cows, chickens, sheepdogs, plows, Fresnos, tractors, cooks, foremen, ranch hands, goat herders, and as he quoted, “a keg of ten-penny nails, coyotes, cottontails and several hundred other things.”

Burroughs then bought a prize herd of Berkshire swine, and constructed a series of unfiltered pools that were linked by waterfalls, a nine-hole golf course, a ballroom and theater that could host 200 people. The “Los Angeles Times” described the Burroughs’ estate the following way:

“Tarzana is reached through a red, ragged-robin rose hedge, and riding through this floral bower, hovered over by humming birds and butterflies, is an experience at once and forever engraved upon the memory. The interior of the interesting castle is both homelike and artistic, a huge fireplace suggesting the delightful evenings of the Burroughs family and their friends; inglenooks, the joy of kiddies in the picture book stage; a well-stocked library; spacious ballroom; stately dining hall, and the breakfast corner with its gorgeous view of the mountains. The swimming pool and the gym attest to the athletic proclivities of the author and his family, which includes three splendid specimens of young America, one daughter, Joan, and two small sons.”

However, in 1922, Burroughs wanted to start “the community” of Tarzana, so he subdivided 50 acres of his ranch, and in 1924, only five years after their purchase, the Burroughs family moved out of their mansion and off ranch property. The mansion itself became the clubhouse for his newly created El Caballero Country Club. The Burroughs took up a spot on the Valley portion of the property where they built a smaller, modern, frame house. Finally, in the late 1930s, a divorced Burroughs sold the entire Tarzana Ranch to a development company for only $30,000.

In 1930, the Tarzana post office opened, and the Tarzana Chamber of Commerce formed. Some residents of Tarzana were less than pleased with the town’s quirky name.). In 1998, Tarzana embraced its icon past by calling its business district the “Safari Walk.” The community has evolved into a diverse and busy Valley community with a population of 40,000 people.
