Moving to Porter Ranch? Here is what you can expect once you get to Porter Ranch.

Porter Ranch, California, is located in northwest San Fernando Valley, neighboring Chatsworth and Northridge. Porter Ranch in an affluent neighborhood that lies just south of the Santa Susana Mountains.

Benjamin Porter, who the community is so named, purchased the property in the late 1800s. Originally, the land that now occupies Porter Ranch was a part of the Rancho Ex-Mission San Fernando, and was really nothing more than wheat fields. Eventually, Porter Ranch evolved into horse ranches and then a suburban development.

In the 1970s, most of the major development occurred in the area, and today, the community consists mostly of gated neighborhoods filled with upscale, single-family homes. According to the Köppen Climate Classification, Porter Ranch has a Mediterranean climate, and the region has hot and dry summers, with am average daily high temperatures between 90–100 degrees. This region includes Northwest, Chatsworth and Porter Ranch. The entire area has a population of 178,276 people with a median age of 39.2. The household income in the area is $75,138, and the median property value is $544,400, with a homeownership rate at 60.7 percent. The population of the region has a citizenry that is 42.7 percent white, 29.2 percent Hispanic, and 18.9 percent Asian. While Porter Ranch has seen expansive growth and the area is well-populate, it has one of the lowest densities of any neighborhood in the city, alone with a relatively high median income level.

Because of its proximity to Hollywood, Porter Ranch has been used as a suburban backdrop to many films and shows. Most notably, it is the set location of the movie, “E.T. the Extra-terrestrial,” in 1982.

The area encompassing Porter Ranch has dealt with some controversy, which includes a massive natural gas storage facility that is about a mile away on county land. Southern California Gas struggled to plug a massive methane leak there, and the leak made thousands of the residents sick, which led to their displacement. Residents knew about the gas storage facility that was constructed in the early 1970s because in the past, fires had broken out there and the flames could be seen at night from most parts of the Valley. However, in environmental impact reports released by the Porter Ranch Development Company, who built large, master-planned communities there in the late 1980s and early 1990s, there is no obvious reference to the natural gas storage facility.
