Moving to Irvine? Here is what you can expect once you get to Irvine.

Irvine has quite a history, and things really got rolling in1846 when the Mexican-American War ended, and the Treaty of Guadalupe that followed, annexed California to the United States. In 1868, the land that occupies Irvine was divide among numerous claimants, including four prosperous sheep ranchers: Llewellyn Bixby, Benjamin and Thomas Flint, and James Irvine. Along the way, two ranches were sold to the foursome, the 50,000-acre Rancho San Joaquin and the 47,000-acre Rancho Lomas de Santiago. In 1878, Irvine acquired his partners' shares of the land for $150,000, and His 110,000 acres followed 23 miles of land from the Pacific Ocean to the Santa Ana River.

When James Irvine died in 1886, his son, James Irvine, Jr., came into possession of the property, shifting the ranch to crops, olives, and citrus orchards. By 1918, around 60,000 acres was devoted to lima bean production, and two Marine Corps air facilities were built on land that Irvine sold to the government.

It wasn't until James Irvine, Jr. died in 1947 that the land was opened up to urban development. Not only was a new campus of the University of California developed, but a master plan was drawn up to create for 50,000 folks. Hence, by 1970, the Irvine villages of Turtle Rock, University Park, Culverdale, the Ranch and Walnut were completed. Irvine is now home to more than 250,000 citizens and is 66 square miles.
