Moving to Hermosa Beach? Here is what you can expect once you get to Hermosa Beach.

Like its neighbors on the beach to the north and south, Hermosa Beach was once part of the Rancho Sausal Redondo. The ranch was 25,000 acres of superb grazing grounds along the coastal plain of the Los Angeles Basin.

In the early 1900s, developers from the Hermosa Beach Land and Water Co, purchased 1,500 acres to create a vacation community for the rich folks in the area, looking for cooler air in the summer. See, the winds that blow off the bay keep temperatures cooler than those inland, sometimes up to 30 degrees cooler.

By 1903, developers built a downtown area that serves the folks who resided in the five permanent houses and an assortment of shacks that lined that beach. After the downtown was strung together, an early version of the Strand boardwalk began construction. The wooden pier became the first in a series of three municipal piers that extended 500 feet off the shore.

In 1907, the city Hermosa Beach incorporated, and promptly purchased two miles of beach from the Hermosa Beach Land and Water Co. The deed stated that coastline would be “held in perpetuity as a beach playground, free from commerce, and for the benefit of not only the residents of Hermosa, but also for the sea lovers of Southern California.” As Hermosa Beach found its legs, it became a popular among vacationers, and huge groves of folks converged during high point of the tourist season.

In the 1940s, Lighthouse nightclub opened in Hermosa Beach, and it quickly became a spot for jazz fans to congregate. The house band was nationally known and the likes Miles Davis, Chet Baker, and other famous performers made the rounds through the nightclub. Recently, The Lighthouse received renewed national attention because it was a filming location for the film “La La Land,” and it still holds to its roots and hosts great jazz acts.

In the 1960s, Hermosa Beach pier became a popular surfing hotbed, especially along the third pier, and the sport eventually won over the community, becoming central to the town’s culture. In fact, it became so popular that Hermosa Beach opened the Surfer’s Walk of Fame in 2003.

Therefore, all of you surfers, fans of the culture, or general fans of the shore, can find the beach town of your dreams in Hermosa Beach. With nearly two miles of gorgeous beach that is recreation-friendly (surfing, swimming, fishing, and beach volleyball), and less than 20 miles from downtown Los Angeles, you can have both a relaxing beach vibe and an electric city all at your fingertips.

Hermosa Beach is a stellar great place to settle and even raise a family. The Strand is a wide, and vibrant beach boardwalk that connects Hermosa Beach to Manhattan Beach and Redondo Beach, It provides amazing views of the beach and access to numerous bars, restaurants, and eclectic shops.

In addition, Hermosa Beach offers economic opportunities galore, as the median per capita income of its residents is more than $100,000. And we can't forget Fiesta Hermosa, an arts and crafts festival, the town's weekly farmers’ market, and hilarious shows at the The Comedy & Magic Club, with weekly shows by Jay Leno.
