There are a few theories as to how Gardenia got its name, but the theory that is most fitting is that it was acquired because the valley where it lies is a beautiful garden spot, a very fertile, green valley that was created by the nearby Laguna Dominguez slough and channel.

Gardena was incorporated in 1930, combining the rural communities of Gardena, Strawberry Park, and Moneta. When it was incorporated, Gardena was a rural farming community with around 20,000 citizens.

Today, Gardenia is a full-service city that is 5.9 square miles in size. It is a family-oriented city with many community programs, beautiful homes with huge yards and lush landscaping, culturally diversity, and a lot of pride.

Gardena’s many family-oriented neighborhoods with 21,472 residential units provide housing options in a variety of styles.  Gardenia has 280 senior units in three senior subsidized housing communities. Gardenia has come a long way from its early beginnings of as a community of homes of the grand rancho estates of the Dominguez, Amestoy, Ducazau, and Rosecrans families in the 1880s. It is now a working-class suburban community with a large heart and a lot of soul.
