Moving to Culver City? Here is what you can expect once you get to Culver City.

Culver City only totals 5 square miles, but the city packs a lot of punch. Known as the “Heart of Screenland,” the city, which is a part Los Angeles city, was name after Harry H. Culver. Culver was a settler from Milford, Nebraska, who came to California to build a balanced city in 1913. Culver City became an incorporated entity in 1917.

Culver established the city in a climate-friendly zone, along a transportation route, halfway between the growing area of Los Angeles and Abbot Kinney's resort of Venice.

Culver City earned most of its revenue from the railroad system in its early days, but quickly established itself by paving the streets, adopting a numbering system for addresses, and hiring city workers to tend to city's needs. Culver also established a fire and police departments.

Eventually, the movie studios helped form a great economic base for Culver City. Then, when Prohibition occurred, numerous nightspots opened up to cater to the demand for alcohol. Culver City became a star when production studios began relocating there in the early 1900s.

Through the years, more than forty annexations increased city size from a starting area of 1.2 miles with a centralized Main Street to about five square miles. Then, in 1947, Culver City made the transition from a general law city to a charter city. Furthermore, along with a strong city government, schools became a part of the community, and by 1949, Culver City had its own Unified School District, offering public education through secondary school. Today, a five-member Board of Education governs Culver City's public schools just as the five-member city-counsel governs the city.

Blending movie nostalgia with current trends, Culver City pulls on the heartstrings while pushing the envelope. Residents find ice-skating rinks, beautiful tree-lined streets, and community theatres. There are also pool halls and dive bars, independent art galleries, and restaurants with delicious food. The city now has nearly 40,000 residents. There are many reasons to make Culver City your home, but it is especially awesome for budding actors who want to be the middle of the action, or fans of celebrity looking to catch a glimpse of actors. It is also a nifty spot to raise a family.
