Moving to Azusa? Here is what you can expect once you get to Azusa.

Azusa, California, is located in Los Angeles County, 20 miles outside of metropolitan Los Angeles, and it shares a border with Citrus, Covina, Duarte, Glendora, Irwindale, and Vincent. Azusa is within close proximity to both rural and urban areas, making it a unique spot to make a home. Canyons and valleys lie to the north, so there is always the opportunity for hiking, camping, and other outdoor activities, while the big city is on the horizon.

The city has a population of 48,498 people, who have a rather low median age of 29.1. The median household income of the Azusa residents is $56,569, and the median property value is $342,000. The population of Azusa is 63.4 percent Hispanic, 20.7 percent white, and 10.5 percent Asian.

The area that would become Azusa was once roamed by the Shoshonean Indian, who hunted the valley near Brea Canyon before homesteaders settled in the area. The Native American tribe was called the Asuksa-gna by the locals, and later, the name would be evolve to Azusa, and was adopted for the city's name.

From its Native American roots, Azusa would become a ranch community, and Englishman Henry Dalton grew vineyards and developed various processing industries. Eventually, he became very wealthy when gold was discovered in San Gabriel Canyon I 1954, and the Gold Rush began. During the next 20 years, around $12 million in gold was discovered and shipped to mints across United States.

The rush ended the Dalton Ranch Dalto, and the Federal Government took thousands of acres from Dalton on the southern boundary and eastern boundary for homesteading. This brought an influx of folks to the area who claimed 40, 80 or 120 acre lands for their homes. Azusa became an official town in 1887, and the area saw steady influx of homesteaders in the late 19th Century. From the beginning of the 1900s to World War II, dams and power plants were constructed in the area.

The first school in Azusa was built out of logs and brush. It was also the first public school built in the Upper San Gabriel Valley, which was called Azusa Valley in those days. In 1891, the first Union High School, named Citrus, was built at the southwest corner of Citrus near Broadway. On December 29, 1898, Azusa was incorporated as a city of the sixth class. The population in 1890 was 800, and in 1899 it still only 865 people.
