Moving to Altadena? Here is what you can expect once you get to Altadena.
Altadena is a community of Los Angeles County, California, that is "still" unincorporated, on purpose. The community lies within the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains, and its boundaries on three sides are the wilderness, which include the Arroyo Seco, Angeles National Forest, and Eaton Canyon). To the south of Altadena one finds the city of Pasadena.
Altadena is more than 125 years old, and its distinct geography with nature all around, the community has inspired an independent spirit. For many years, the citizens have fought hard to protect the community's sovereignty, especially from annexation to Pasadena, which has tried to take the area 46 times. Altadena has also consistently voted against incorporating itself. Because of this, the people of Altadena enjoy a loose political structure, while also taking hold of a unique identity.
Altadena’s roots as part of America date back to when settlers began tapping the canyons for water sources. Benjamin Eaton developed water systems for Don Benito Wilson and Dr. John Griffin, the owners of a 14,000-acre ranch that eventually became Pasadena, South Pasadena, and Altadena. After a while, Eaton began growing grapes and citrus with ease and with very little water right beneath the foothills.
In 1873, a group led by Eaton purchased 2,400 acres of land from Wilson and Griffin in 1873. They immediately began building a community, many of which were Union veterans, who wanted a beautiful, isolated area of civility and good health. The abundant harvest of grapes in Altadena helped boost Los Angeles County to become the state’s largest wine producer.
In late 1887, Altadena became a subdivision through the efforts of John and Fred Woodbury, who migrated from Marshalltown, Iowa. The Woodbury family wanted to create an affluent rural suburb of Pasadena, which moved slowly because of a chaotic national economy, but was helped by Thaddeus Lowe’s mountain railway that connected Los Angeles to Pasadena to Altadena and beyond.
From the 1890s to the 1920s, ranchers and residents continued to grow grapes, and expanded into oranges, olives, walnuts, dates, avocados, commercial fruit, and ornamental plant nurseries. Business magnates also began to develop the area because of its wonderful climate and rural ambiance.
Today, Altadena has a population of 45,001 people, with a median age of 43.2. The community has a median household income of $88,236, and a median property value of $621,400. The community is wonderfully diverse, with a population that is 39.3 percent white, 26.6 percent Hispanic, and 21.2 percent black.
